ITZY - BORN TO BE
Review
"Born To Be" features an epic, bombastic, in-your-face arrangement, but only up to the pre-chorus, because the overly repetitive chorus let's the song down hard. The militant march vibe with its compressed synth-bass is effective while it lasts, but lacks the melodic range to stand out and it ends up becoming noise very fast. The bridge is definitely the highlight of the track and the most catchy part, with the dynamic after-chorus rap section being the glue that keeps the whole track cohesive.
Unfortunately the song is a mixed bag, with some very strong sections with some almost unlistenable parts, like those awkward 'yeah's throughout the whole duration, the fan-chants in the background and those weird robotic voices near the end. It is obvious they were going for a more powerful sound and instead they ended up annoying and tiring the listener. Maybe those chants and screams would work better in a live performance with the audience chanting with them, but in a music video they just go beyond distracting.
The choreography is pleasing to the eye and the video photography does its best to enhance the enjoyment with extra movement, when it feels necessary, and the alternating between hot and cold color schemes. The costume designs scream girl-crush but they don't stand out. "Born To Be" was supposed to mark a new era for the group and they needed a strong start. Unfortunately this is not it.
