Song Review: KISS OF LIFE Make A Comeback With "Bad News" And SOOJIN (ex-(G)I-DLE) Makes Her Solo Debut With "Agassy"

KISS OF LIFE (키스오브라이프) - Bad News

Review

KISS OF LIFE has certainly captured attention with their unique approach, setting themselves apart from many other K-pop groups. Unlike most groups, the members themselves take charge of their releases, showcasing their vocal dynamism, rapping prowess, and undeniable charisma. Their ability to make the usually cringey K-pop rap verses enjoyable is commendable, and the powerful notes in "Bad News" truly make the song stand out. As a unit, they are incredibly impressive and cohesive, possessing a star quality that extends beyond their visuals.

The song blends pop, hip-hop, rock and country influences into a stomping anthem carried by the members' powerful vocals and rap verses, filling a void in the K-pop scene. However, it feels like their label focused solely on capturing that country/blues vibe and left the quartet to carry the rest of the song. This is frustrating because the potential is evident, but the chorus lacks impact and the production feels lacking. Despite the girls' best efforts, the instrumental weighs the song down upon repeated listens.

Nevertheless, "Bad News" is very enjoyable and I can imagine it being a thrilling performance at a live concert. Overall, KISS OF LIFE has made an impressive comeback, proving that the bad-ass girl group concept is not only feasible but also captivating.

SOOJIN (수진) - Agassy (아가씨)

Review

Soojin makes a triumphant return with her debut solo mini-album, "AGASSY". The EP album is a testament to her resilience and growth, both as an artist and individual. "AGASSY" showcases Soojin's unique charm with its delicate oriental instrumentation and her soft, breathy vocals. The music video is equally stunning, featuring a determined Soojin against backdrops inspired by classic art. The song's pacing can be a little tedious at times and the chorus is rather weak and uninteresting, but "AGASSY" features an evocative atmosphere and a stylish production that make up for them. The most important issue is that Soojin is back and  "AGASSY" puts her immense potential on display for the world to see once more.
