Song Review: AESPA Make A Comeback With "Drama"

aespa (에스파) - Drama

Review

Let me start by saying that "Drama" is AESPA's best title track till now, and by far! "Drama" showcases the group's evolved musical style and vocal prowess. It features a powerful blend of hip-hop with EDM, characterized by aggressive drum beats, a sophisticated synth bass, and an infectious melody, while the lyrics exude confidence, proclaiming that all stories begin with the self.

"Drama"'s explosive bridge highlights AESPA's impressive vocals, but I find the "I'm so badass" posturing and catchphrase-heavy songwriting rather tiresome and overly-used nowadays. There are some obvious similarities to BLACKPINK's style, but they are tempered by SM Entertainment's penchant for distorted, experimental production, and the group manages to own the concept perfectly in the end. Overall, "Drama" solidifies AESPA's position as a rising global force in the K-pop scene, even if its musical direction still remains somewhat divisive among listeners.
