Song Review: ROCKET PUNCH Make A Comeback With "Ring Ring", AESPA With "Next Level" And FROMIS_9 With "We Go"

Rocket Punch (로켓펀치) - Ring Ring

Review

Rocket Punch have now decided to dab into retro-synth pop music by releasing an modern-retro, synth-pop track with their new single "Ring Ring". Similar to many K-pop songs of this style, Ring Ring's instrumental borrows many elements from the iconic group A-Ha and especially their masterpiece "Take On Me". Nevertheless, the instrumental of "Ring Ring" is undeniably appealing and ridiculously catchy. The opening riff sets the tone for Rocket Punch's full-on approach, and the track shines brightest when it embraces this mission. The moments that detract from the song are the more trendy elements, such as the unnecessary hip breakdown in the second verse and the overly cheerful ending to each chorus, disrupting the stronger melody that precedes it. Despite these minor flaws and occasional strained vocals, "Ring Ring" holds up quite well.

The song is elevated by a powerful pre-chorus and a hook that incorporates just enough retro elements to evoke nostalgia. Overall, "Ring Ring" is a fun song that provides an exhilarating rush of energy dipped in nostalgia, but with a modern, overproduced sound.

aespa (에스파) - Next Level

Review

AESPA's "Next Level" is an ambitious and genre-bending track that continues the rookie girl group's unique sci-fi concept and storyline. Even though the song is a remake of the track of the same name by A$ton Wyld from the Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw soundtrack, aespa and SM Entertainment have rearranged and reinterpreted it to fit the group's futuristic sound and expanding lore.

Musically, "Next Level" is a rollercoaster ride that jams together multiple distinct parts and styles. It opens with a gritty, electronic sound reminiscent of action movie scenes before transitioning into the repetitive yet catchy "Next Level" hook. Then a brief, rather weird "Lalalala" refrain follows, which doesn't match the cool vibe very much. The song then shifts gears completely, moving into a powerful vocal showcase from Ningning and Winter over a thumping beat, and then a peppy, rap-heavy verse with an urban pop feel. While not all the transitions are smooth, the song's sheer ambition and dynamism is engaging.

Lyrically, "Next Level" is flooded with terminology from AESPA's unique concept, which depicts the members connecting with their virtual avatar counterparts and traveling to the digital world of "Kwangya" to fight their arch-enemy the big black snake Black Mamba. The music video expands and complements on this sci-fi storyline with stunning futuristic visuals and CGI set-pieces. Overall, "Next Level" is a polarizing but memorable comeback that sees AESPA further developing their unique identity.

fromis_9 (프로미스나인 ) - WE GO

Review

After a long break, Fromis 9 appeared to have found their groove with the lively "Feel Good" last September, so they made the wise choice of sticking with the same composers for their latest title track "We Go". Their music shines brightest when embracing a classic pop sound, steering clear of girl-crush or aegyo trends, in favor of a more carefree and uplifting style.

"We Go" is exuding optimism and features a marvelously catchy refrain. While it initially hints at K-pop's city pop trend, the track swiftly transitions into a robust summer vibe. Its infectious groove is often veiled in a dreamy haze, yet its rhythm remains engaging and addictive, with the chorus enhanced by satisfying layers of synth that bring a refreshing depth to the instrumental.

The melody of "We Go" also impresses, particularly in the dynamic chorus that layers the girls' vocals for a captivating effect. Although the chant-like refrain in the first and final choruses may seem formulaic, it still contributes to the track's positive energy. Throughout, "We Go" maintains a strong momentum, which is crucial to its overall success.

While "We Go" may not introduce anything groundbreaking to the scene, its infectious energy more than makes up for its lack of innovation. As the track builds up to a climactic finale, its charm becomes more and more irresistible. The consistent energy and upbeat vibe of "We Go" ensure that listeners remain captivated and entertained from start to finish.
