GWSN (공원소녀) - Like It Hot

Release Info & Mini Bio

GWSN (Girls in the Park) released their fifth mini album "The Other Side of the Moon" today, on May 26, 2021 with the song "Like It Hot" serving as the album's title track. The album, which will contain six tracks, will also be released physically on a CD. This one is the follow-up to their fourth mini album "The Keys" which was released on April 28, 2020.

Track List

"Like It Hot" has a great, catchy and memorable chorus, with the girls showcasing their vocal strengths and charisma during the hooks. They play with the highs and lows, the deep bass, and the funky vibe of the chorus, going from up-beat to mid-tempo and back again with a relaxed easiness. The melodies alternate in tone and variation while maintaining the track's coherence and without sacrificing the rhythm. Overall, "Like It Hot", with its unique arrangements, is a solid track and a memorable comeback for a group that is struggling to find its place in today's K-pop world.

JOY (조이) - Je T’aime (Live Video)

Release Info & Mini Bio

Joy (Red Velvet) released today, May 26, 2021, the live version of her first digital single "Je T’aime"  as a pre-release single for her debut special album "Hello" which is scheduled for May 31, 2021. The album will consist of six tracks that are remakes of popular songs from the 1990s and 2000s in Joy's own color.

Review

Je T'aime" features a refreshing and reassuring mood with a colorful and classic arrangement, a dancing piano performance and a fluid string melody, creating a fantastic atmosphere and a feeling of euphoria. Joy's clear and soft tone is highlighted by the song's refreshing and fairytale-like vibe, with Joy's sweet and enchanting vocals giving the song an ethereal, melancholic feeling.

CHECKMATE (체크메이트) - YOU

Release Info & Mini Bio

Checkmate made a comeback as a four-member (Nason left the group) co-ed group in March 21, 2021 with their second single album "You" and the same-titled song serving as the single's title track. The album will contain the new version of the song "Drum" with the current line-up, plus instrumental versions of both songs and it will also be released physically on a CD.

Track List

Review

The music video showcases the group's powerful performance skills, with intense lighting reminiscent of a live stage. The more extreme choreography and visuals aim to captivate the viewer's attention and differentiate themselves from the other, more famous, co-ed group.

"YOU" expresses themes of a deep, passionate connection between two people and the desire to break free from restraints to be together. The chorus repeats phrases like "It's you & me" and "all I want is you" to emphasize this message of love and longing. Nature imagery like the moon, wind and a growing storm add to the song's romantic, emotionally charged atmosphere.

Musically it is not as catchy or in-your-face as their previous single, "Drum", but it is a more complicated and mature electro-pop track that stays a lot longer in your mind after the first hearing.

Checkmate also released a new music video for their debut song "Drum" titled "Drum (NEW)" on May 17, 2021, with the new line-up which was labeled as a performance video, but let's be honest here, this is simply the "new" music video, albeit a low budget one.
